I lost my balance going up 3 steps to our deck. I grabbed the railing and fell into it and it bent where the screws anchored and down I went. So, it’s purpose for stability did not serve us well. I would not purchase again.

The rail does not seem sturdy against horizontal motion. If someone heavy were to lose balance and grab the bar to stop from falling sideways, it feels as if the bar would give way to a considerable degree. This is despite my reinstalling the bar to the bracket after tightening the screws as far as they will go. I think the problem is the use of flathead screws to make the bar / bracket attachment and the thinness of the bracket. I’m not returning it because it’s better than nothing for elderly relatives who visit us, but I’m not confident it will hold up in the long run.Update: After purchasing another brand’s rail, one for which the bar is welded to the plate, I tested my earlier expectation. I found that indeed a grown man falling to the side and grabbing the bar would easily bend the 45 degrees away from perpendicular to the wall, leaving a floppy useless rail. I have now replaced this rail with the welded version, with which I’m happy (and which cost about the same amount as this one on Amazon).
