The story behind RENOVAHEALTH™ is both deeply personal and driven by a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of older adults, particularly those facing the challenges of aging in place.
The inspiration behind RENOVAHEALTH™ stemmed from a series of heart-wrenching experiences with my mother, who, after a series of falls, endured a near-fatal accident that left her bruised, shaken, and in need of extensive recovery. Seeing her suffer from a distance as I learned of each fall was agonizing. I wanted to find a way to not only prevent these falls but also to empower people like my mother to better navigate and live in their own environments safely.
My mother’s fifth fall, which occurred when she was 75, was a pivotal moment. She tripped on the bottom stair of a rental home in Washington, D.C., and fell, slamming the back of her head on a flagstone paver. This event caused significant bruising, a large hematoma, and a prolonged recovery. The anger and helplessness I felt in witnessing her suffering from afar sparked a realization: something needed to be done to help people like my mother—particularly older adults living independently—feel safer in their own homes.
This frustration, combined with my growing interest in technology, led me to develop the concept for a software application and platform that could use augmented reality (AR) and digital twins—3D, captured environments—to identify and mitigate fall hazards in the home. With advances in technology, particularly in spatial computing, it became clear that we could harness these tools to visualize and assess potential dangers, like obstacles or mobility challenges, in real time. The idea was simple yet powerful: help people see the risks around them so they could take action to reduce them, thus improving their safety and quality of life.
I pursued this vision while working towards my Master of Healthcare Leadership (MHL) degree at Brown University. During this time, I was introduced to Keno Mullings of The Mullings Group through Annette Tonti, Director of RIHub. This introduction led to our participation in the Code Extreme Challenge, where we attempted to rapidly build an app prototype within two weeks. While our team wasn’t selected, the experience marked the beginning of an ongoing partnership with Keno. We continued to meet regularly, refining the user journey and experience for the RENOVAHEALTH™ platform.
By the end of 2023, we reached a major milestone: the launch of our minimum viable product (MVP). This achievement also brought us into partnership with HITLAB, a leading healthcare technology incubator in Manhattan. Since then, our efforts have gained momentum, and we’ve made meaningful progress in our mission to revolutionize aging in place—focusing on reducing the risks of falls and improving overall health outcomes for older adults.
